2012's Key Interior Design Trends

http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/With more and more of us opting to stick in our current abodes and make the best out of our surroundings rather than 'twisting' and launching ourselves into the unsettled housing market, the popularity of home improvement and renovation remains healthy in 2012. But what are the key trends that we should all be looking out for...?

Folksy and ethnic designs have been popular for a good number of years already in both fashion and interior design, so this trend isn't coming out of nowhere, but the enthusiasm for the 'do it yourself' element of craft design is really taking off in these austere times that we find ourselves in.
On a cultural front this movement chimes with other artistic areas such as music, with the massive success of folks artists such as Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling and the unabating popularity of festivals, particularly with the recent flight to quality trend for festival goers to favour more boutique artsy festivals rather than corporate behemoths. Arguably, this all represents a thirst for smaller scale personal and organic experiences where provenance remains a key factor. In terms of design, traditional floral patterns, rustic, animal and country themes play an important role with many tipping the fox to overtake the owl as the must-have animal design in the home. However, it is the method as much as the end result that lies at the heart of this trend, with nature having a strong influence on materials too. Today's economic pressures are pushing more of us towards the idea, not mention the charms, of both 'make do and mend' and 'do it yourself' crafts, embracing small-scale traditional techniques, whilst practicality and provenance encourages exponents of the trend towards natural locally sourced materials such as wool or wood.
Again mid-century design is an ongoing trend rather than a new kid on the block but it is on course to keep hold of its popularity from the last couple of years. Simple, clean, modernist shapes and objects define this trend with function, colour blocks and natural wood playing an important role. Designs take influence from the 40s, 50s & 60s with the Scandinavians continuing to be major proponents of the style.

Fitting alongside the craft and mid-century trends (as well as complementing retro/futuristic themes, e.g., 70s futurism) is the simple concept of combining strong accent colours with natural colour backdrops. In its more radical territory these accent colours can be neon or luminous set against the natural canvases of pastels, whites or greys.
http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/One movement which successful brings together, and, in turn, influences, most of these other trends is that of Scandinavian design. Designs from the Denmark, Sweden, Norway and (the lesser appreciated) Finland continue to have a strong impact on the aesthetics of our homes here in the UK. Scandinavian themes can be successful in amalgamating design threads with the simple functional elegance of mid-century, craft designs' combinations of natural fabrics/materials with bold or folsky repeating prints and the use of stark colour contrasts. The results are often stylised and graphic but complimentary to the surrounding architecture and environment, whether it be natural wooden tables, repeating bold print wallpaper or colourful patterned knitted throws.

Home Remodeling Is Still Big Business in a Shaky Economy

http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/Driven by a continuous slide in home prices, consumers are reevaluating and redesigning their living spaces for the long haul, and with more than 20% of mortgages still underwater and foreclosures still plaguing many housing markets across America, the "long haul" could be a while.

So what does this mean for general contractors and remodeling professionals? According to a recent survey conducted by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), home renovation projects are up from a similar survey conducted in 2010, with nearly 50% of the contractors surveyed seeing an increase in the number of home owners who undertake remodels to avoid moving. Bath and kitchen remodeling projects jumped 17% from two years ago, with bathroom taking the lead as the most common job reported by remodelers, followed by kitchen remodels. In addition, other popular remodeling categories included window and door replacements (44%), whole house remodels (35%), room additions (33%) and handyman services (31%).

And in February, the NAHB stated that the residential remodeling market will continue to experience measured growth in 2012 after the Remodeling Market Index (RMI) rose to a five year-high at the end of 2011. These numbers probably give a good indication that Americans may be inclined to spend some money on sprucing up their current homes while they ride out the sluggish housing market. And while average folks are hunkering down, well funded investors are out in full force, securing low priced deals on foreclosed properties to answer the demand of a rising renter's market.
http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/

http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/From kitchen cabinets to bathroom vanities to flooring to appliances, it seems that this remodeling trend is breathing new life into old homes. In 2010, the remodeling industry saw Americans spend $116 billion on improvements to owner-occupied units, and if the recent NAHB survey is any indication, the home remodeling industry should see another banner year as consumers invest in renovations and remodeling again. Finally, beyond an improvement in the U.S. housing market, other key factors that should drive remodeling expenditures over the next few years will be a rapidly aging housing stock, particularly due to a lack of new construction starts throughout the housing crisis, as well as an increasing interest in improving home efficiency and green remodeling.

National Home Renovation Month, Invest In Your Biggest Investment

http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/Things definitely seem to be turning around as experts project a $16 billion* increase in home remodeling expenditures this year (up from $280 billion).

Homeowners who may have been planning to move into larger or smaller homes before the recession are now considering changes to their current homes to accommodate their changing needs:

* Anticipating an empty nest in a too big house, some are looking at situations where college age children have remained (or returned) home and need to make it more livable for adults.
* Expanding families are now looking to expand their homes instead of moving into a larger house that may or may not retain its current value.
* A larger kitchen could be created by expanding into the kid's bedroom next door.
* The master bath could be added off the back of the house at the same time we add a changing room by the pool.

Other types of improvements can have an even greater impact on your home's value. Particularly those projects that can improve energy efficiency. For instance, by upgrading older air conditioners with SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) ratings of 8 or less to with one of today's 15 or 16 SEER AC units, homeowners can save upwards of 50% on their monthly cooling costs. Other appliance and lighting upgrades can help homeowners make significant energy savings.

Not only will potential buyers gravitate to homes that cost less to run, but you'll enjoy those monthly savings, too.

Projects large and small can help lower utility bills. For those larger projects, it's always best to work with qualified professionals.

It might look like you can save a few dollars here and there by doing it yourself, but in the long run, using an experienced contractor will save you money because they:

* Receive discounted pricing on most materials and supplies that can be passed onto you
* Know how to make installations within the manufacturer's requirements, ensuring that any applicable warranties are honored
* Have the specialty (and often very expensive) tools and equipment to do the work quickly and efficiently
* Know local codes and requirements
* Understand what building permits and inspections are required and how to get them
* Bring special expertise to projects that also involve home insurance and warranty claims.
* Provide insider knowledge*on projects that also involve HUD regulations, such as their popular 203(k) Rehabilitation Loan program, where qualified contractors:
o Help the process move more quickly. Lenders and buyers appreciate quotes that sail through the loan underwriting process the first time
o Educate the agents, buyers and lenders involved on allowed improvements
o Keep the project on the required schedule
o Ensuring that the buyer's loan process is completed correctly at the end of the renovation project.

Also, when you factor in the value of your time, it just makes more sense to use an experienced professional. Think about the hours (or days) you'll need to spend on a do-it-yourself project:

* running around town researching codes and getting permits
* going online to learn how to feather drywall mud or properly caulk windows
* finding, buying and delivering the least expensive materials
* researching FHA (HUD) regulations and requirements

Qualified contractors take care of all these things for you, it's a huge part of the value they bring to your home improvement projects.

From tax consultants to lawyers and doctors, we depend on trained professionals to help us with their expertise.

It would be nearly impossible for the average consumer to maintain up-to-date knowledge of:

* annual changes in the tax laws
* how new federal, state and local legislation might impact us
* the latest developments in cardiovascular and cancer treatments and medications

We understand that these professionals are continuously learning throughout their careers to ensure that they are doing their best for their clients and patients.

But we don't always appreciate the importance of staying current on industry changes in some of the other types of professionals we hire regularly.

We probably wouldn't choose a doctor because, "He's close by, fast and cheap." But we might use a neighbor's recommendation like: "Pete down the street has been taking care of my AC for years...."

http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/Chances are, we're not going to ask if Pete knows about:

* the government and utility incentives available to homeowners who upgrade or retrofit their HVAC (heating, ventilation, air conditioning) systems?
* all the EPA regulations that are and will continue to impact the heating and air conditioning industry?
o how to properly capture and recycle vented or leaked Freon (R-22 refrigerant)?
o how much the price of Freon will exponentially increase as it's manufacture and use is restricted in the coming years?
o what modifications need to be made in your unit to convert from R-22 to R-410A (a blend of hydrofluorocarbons that does not contribute to ozone depletion)?

* how to maximize your units efficiency with proper regular maintenance?

* what your AC manufacturer's maintenance recommendations are?

However, it's vitally important that the HVAC technician you hire to service and maintain your heating and air conditioning system, knows these things. Anyone who tells you, "don't worry about that tiny Freon leak, I'll stop by in a couple months and refill it for you..." does not have your best interests in mind:

* First off, it's against the law (as of 2010) to allow Freon to escape into the atmosphere. You could be cited and fined for knowingly allowing your coils to leak Freon.
* Secondly, with increasing restriction on Freon production, the price will be steadily increasing (in some case monthly), so his bi-monthly "top offs" will become more and more expensive

At the very least, you need to immediately fix such leaks. But, even better, would be to upgrade your unit to one that does not use this outdated coolant.

A qualified professional AC technician will know about the best EnergyStar rated systems for your home as well as all the incentives available to help you off-set your investment in a new system.

Notes:

*Home remodeling expenditures: According to the Remodeling Futures Program at the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard University, remodeling expenditure is currently estimated at $280 billion dollars a year. That represents almost 40 percent of all residential construction and improvement spending and more than 2 percent of the U.S. economy. Their Leading Indicator of Remodeling Activity (LIRA) report projects annual spending will see healthy growth in 2012, ending the year up 5.9%. That's $16.52 billion more spent on remodeling this year!

Home Improvement - Good and Bad Investments for Cincinnati Homes in 2012

http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/Every year, Remodeling Magazine publishes a cost vs. value report in which they empirically compare how homeowners are investing in their properties and how these investments ultimately pay off in the resale of their house. While there are many reasons to invest in home repairs or remodeling jobs, there are ultimately projects that will be worth the investment in terms of resale value, and those that won't be. Here we will dissect the data for the Cincinnati area and help you make good investments for 2012.

Home Improvements: Proceed With Caution The financial return for home construction projects reached a high nationally in 2005 with an 85% return on investment. Now obviously these projects vary, but essentially in 2005 if you invested money into fixing up your home, then you could reasonably expect 85% of that money back when it came time to sell the home. That number has dropped every year since 2005 and has now reached a 10 year low such that in 2011-2012, a home repair or remodeling project will likely only see a 57.7% return on investment. Grim to be sure, but do not be discouraged. Certain projects are still well worth the investment but are dragged down by grossly under-performing projects. So first, the projects to avoid in Cincinnati this year.

The Black List - Repair and Remodeling Projects to Avoid Project to Avoid #1 Home Office Remodeling = 36%* Return on Investment

Remodeling your home office is not worth it. Do you think realtors often hear this comment from prospective buyers: "I know it didn't have enough bedrooms for us and that the kitchen was in bad shape, but did you see that office? I could spend so much time in there!" The answer, simply, is no. Offices are functional and convenient for the stay-at-home worker but are a luxury compared to an extra bedroom or a lightly remodeled kitchen. This will certainly vary depending on your neighborhood and situation, but as long as people are commuting to work in Cincinnati, a home office will not be worth it to a prospective buyer and thus not worth it for you as a remodeling project.

Project to Avoid #2 Complete Bath/Kitchen/Basement Remodels = 55.7% Return

While a home office remodeling job will be the biggest offender in terms of poor return on investment; remodeling your kitchen, bathroom-repair-or-upgrade-vs-additions-and-remodels/">bathroom, or basement will not pay either. We all want a beautiful kitchen space, but in Cincinnati a complete kitchen remodeling job will cost upwards of $109,000 and will only return $59,251 or 54%. Bathrooms and basements fare slightly better at 55.8% and 57.3%, respectively. With such a high initial capital investment, it is hard to conceive that these steep costs will translate into an equally higher home price when it comes time to sell.

Project to Avoid #3 Home Additions = 50% Return

When the going was good with the housing market, adding on to your house was a no-brainer. Increasing the overall square foot size of your home as well as adding on the utility of another bedroom, bathroom, or other more discretionary expenditures would have likely paid off. But in these more difficult times, that sale is not so easy. Home buyers now are much more conscious of the increased energy and maintenance costs that a home addition requires as well as the near $100,000 that the average home addition will cost in Cincinnati. Additions on the low end in Cincinnati will cost $87,491 and see a 51% return while on the high end will cost $121,696 and will see a 48% return which makes these projects real financial losers in the end.

The Good List - Projects Most Worth their Initial Investment Worthwhile Project #1 Attic Remodeling = 72.6% Return

Turning your attic space into a bedroom (and even then adding a bathroom) makes a lot of sense. You are adding utility to your home with an added bedroom and you aren't expanding the footprint of your existing house which will cost more to maintain and supply utilities for. These projects do have a high initial cost and should be done with care (IE don't ignore other maintenance items or neglect the rest of your house, this is all cumulative). At an initial cost of $50,205 (down from $51,029 last year) and with an expected resale value of $36,473; a 72.6% return makes remodeling your attic one of the best financial investments that you can make in a Cincinnati-area home.

Worthwhile Project #2 Exterior Repairs = 62.88% Return

Repairing your doors, windows, and siding will almost always be a better investment than any large remodeling project. Not only do these repairs improve the curbside appeal of your home, but they can also add to the integrity of your home against water damage and increase energy efficiencies which will pay dividends for you and any prospective buyers. This high return rate is due in large part to the fact that these projects require relatively low initial investments (less than $20,000) and so are not quite as difficult to recover in the end.

Roof maintenance is immensely important and under-valued; however, be careful with entire roof replacements in this context because such projects have a high initial cost ($40,000+) and are unfortunately not valued very highly as a selling point for home buyers based on this data (50% return). We suggest looking instead at roof repairs and regular maintenance.

Worthwhile Project #3 Kitchen Repairs = 65.7% Return

http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/Repair projects have long outpaced remodeling projects in terms of return on investment, but this is especially true in the kitchen. With complete remodeling projects costing upwards of $50,000 in Cincinnati (and getting only a 54% return), smaller kitchen projects under $20,000 are expected to get more than a 65% return and are a much better investment. Such small repairs would include new counter tops, a tile backsplash, cabinet doors, minor plumbing work, and improving your hardware/appliances as opposed to a complete remodel or structural change.

Get Your Project Started

We've tried to outline what projects are worth taking from a financial perspective and which projects you should avoid as best you can. And while this information is true for the Cincinnati area; conditions will certainly vary by neighborhood, home, budget, and of course family. The best thing that you can do is contact a home repair professional that you trust to see what projects you can do and for how much and then compare (individually or with a real estate agent) this information against home sale data in your area to see if that type of investment is worth it in the long run.

London 2012 Olympics: An Olympic Revolution in Colombia, A Phenomenal Role Model

http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/

Unfortunately, Colombia has one of the worst tragedies in Latin America. Colombia faces more internal troubles than many war-torn countries in sub-Saharan Africa and Southeast Asia. In the Post-Cold War era, it is one of the two countries, together with Peru, in the Western Hemisphere to continue its long-standing war against rebel groups. In the 1960s, a civil conflict broke out between the government and the rebel groups, led by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). Since that decade, Colombia's armed conflict has claimed 200,000 lives and caused more than $15,000 million in damage inflicted. During the past half-century, Colombia was home to at least five rebel groups, most of them with close ties to drug traffickers. Over a period of seven years, between 1984 and 1990, four major politicians were killed.
Incredibly, it is one of the most mine-ridden countries on Earth, along with the Kingdom of Cambodia and the Portuguese-speaking country of Angola (Southern Africa). In the meantime, most of the country's rich ecology has been devastated by narco-traffickers. But that isn't all. Indigenous tribes have been killed or enslaved by rebel groups in the Amazonian region. On the other side, there are over three million internal refugees, which is described by the United Nations as the "worst humanitarian crisis in the Americas". But contrary to what you may think, these hurdles don't have destroyed Colombia in the last decades.
In many ways, its difficult history has inspired to many Colombians to conquer wins, from literature to sports and music. For these and other reasons, I think that Colombia is an extraordinary and admirable country on the Planet.
By 1982, a Colombian author won the Nobel Prize for Literature. This amazing land is also birthplace of Manuel Elkin Patarroyo (my favorite Colombian), among the world's most prominent scientifics, and Fernando Botero, whose paintings are being shown in London, Paris, New York City and other Western cities.
Apart from their hard working people, Colombia is well-known around the globe for its performers such as Shakira, Juanes and Carlos Vives -as well as their beauty queens like Luz Marina Zuluaga or Aura Maria Mojica ("the most beautiful girl of Colombia"). But it has other notable achievements on the global stage, of course. Colombia's reputation as a warn-torn country has been overshadowed by a successful tourism industry with the marketing slogan "Colombia is Passion". Bogota, its modern and friendly capital, and other cities have more foreign visitors than Peru, Bolivia, and many peaceful republics from Latin America.
Certainly, Colombia is not an oil-rich country --- as Venezuela and Ecuador--- but it has Latin America's finest intelligentsia. As a result of this, the country is a major democracy -has not had coups and countercoups for more than half-century-- on the continent since the 1950s and has won praise from Washington for its war against cocaine cartels.
But now Colombia has gained praise for its Olympic revolution. Although suffering a brutal civil conflict since the 1960s, the South American republic is producing top athletes in the 21st Century. Because of its troubles, Colombia should be one of the lowest-ranked Olympic teams in the Third World, but therea are other results. In practice, incredibly, the conflict has not been an impediment to produce Pan American champs and Olympic medalists. Probably, there is no other Olympic squad on the Planet who would be fighting with big passion and dedication. Other notable chapter in the modern history of Colombia, of course.
http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/Like many industrialized societies such as America, Japan, China, Spain and Britain, sport plays a key role on Colombian soil. In spite of being a football-loving, there is a "big passion" for other sports. Increasing number of young athletes are entering such sports triathlon, gymnastics, and taekwondo. At least 80% of the country's international medals came from athletics, gymnastics, and weightlifting. Prior to 21st century, however, Colombia was well-known abroad for producing only footballers, cyclists, and long-distance runners-this should sound familiar to some Latin American nations
Several Latin American republics can not offer much to their athletes, athletic administrators, and coaches, but Colombia has become an Olympic paradise in recent years. Amidst obstacles, sport appears as one of goverment's top priorities.
After gaining its first Olympic gold medal at the 2000 Sydney Games with Maria Isabel Urrutia (women's weightlifting), this nation has embarked on an ambitious program to improve the country's Olympic sport.
In the past, the Colombian administration hosted many international meets, after building several athletic facilities in towns and cities, but they failed to produce world-class athletes. Because the 400th anniversary of the Colombian capital,Bogota hosted the First Bolivarian Games at the turn of the 1930s. Eight years later, by 1946, the Central American and Caribbean Games were held in Barranquilla. This city also was chosen to hold the IV Bolivarian Games in the early 1960s. Over the next decade, in July 1971, Cali was site of the Sixth Pan American Games. A year after hosting the FINA Aquatics World Championships -the major global event held in Latin America since 1970, Colombia won the right to hold the Women's Basketball Global Cup in 1975. Three years later, Medellin was site of the Central American and Caribbean Games. By 1982, the Men's Basketball World Cup was held in many Colombian cities. Since then, these efforts to promote sports had been relatively unsuccessful. In those days, the ill-equipped team from Colombia had difficult tournaments at home. By 1982, for example, the host country was the second country, along with Cote d'Ivoire (Western Africa), without wins in the FIBA Championships, losing their sixth matches; in one of its games, Colombia was defeated by the USSR 143-76.

Annually, in this century, the Colombian state has invested over $200 million in the Olympic project, putting their eyes on zones devastated by poverty, local drug traffickers, and juvenile delinquency- a front-line state in the war against drug trafficking. In its efforts to combat criminal violence in poor neighborhoods and war-torn places, sport is backed strongly by the government and other organizations. Today these warn-torn regions are home of national-class athletes, from boxers and footballers to taekwondo fighters, wrestlers and long-distance runners. In fact, some of Colombia's athletes did not grow up like normal boys. However, today they want to show the good side of Colombia with their international achievements -from records to medals.
Since then, this budget allows the Colombian Olympic Committee (and other sports institutions) to provide the population with one of Latin America's best Olympic systems. On the other side, physical education is a compulsory in all schools, from Barranquilla, Bucaramanga, and Cali to Cucuta and Manizales.
http://alokiangel.blogspot.com/
By 2007, the athletic contingent placed sixth in the XV Pan American Games in Brazil, earning a total of 14 gold, 21 silver, and 13 bronze medals. Here, Colombia began to eclipse many Latin American countries such as Argentina, Chile, and Venezuela. Nonetheless, the story of a country transformed from a warn-torn country into an Olympic paradise occurred when the nation's 2010 Olympian team picked up a total of 372 medals in the South American Games on home soil, surpassing athletes from 14 countries and dependencies. Deservedly, at home, Colombia's sportsmen and women won 144 golds, 124 silvers, and 104 bronzes. Apart from earning regional medals, the Colombian athletes made international headlines when they defeated Brazil in the medal count---Brazil is one of the top Olympian nations in the developing world and a powerhouse in football, judo, sailing and volleyball (indoor and beach). Then, Colombia was the fourth best Olympic team in Latin America at the Pan American Games last year. Here, the nations' total medals were 84 --- 24 gold, 25 silver, and 35 bronze.
Today, Colombia is a leader in numerous sports on the continent and in some fields an international leader. The most important advances have been made in the following disciplines:
Basketball: The national women's squad, under Sofia Nieto's leadership, placed sixth in the 1975 Mexico Pan American Sports Games by losing to Canada 68-58. On the other side, the then USSR defeated the host Colombia 92-34 in the FIBA World Cup in the same year. But more than three decades later, the national side was one of the three medalists in the regional championships. Then, Colombia's female players went on to represent South America at the 2011 Pan American Games at Guadalajara (Mexico), where they reached the semis--- its best performance since the mid-1980s when the team became the sixth South American squad to gain gold in the Continental Cups. In Guadalajara, Colombia again faced Canada --- a powerhouse in women's basketball in the Americas-- but this time the Colombians controlled the game 59-67. This win put Colombia in fourth place in the Pan American championship.

Then, there were national delegations in the next two Games in Germany and Great Britain. Nonetheless, the Colombian representatives did not return to the Summer Games until 1956. From that year, Colombia has competed at each Summer Olympics. Following its participation at Rome'60 and Tokyo'64, the athletic delegation left Bogota for Mexico City to compete in the Olympiad in the late 1960s. On that occasion, the men's soccer side made its international debut in the Olympian tournaments, finishing ninth ahead of Brazil and the former Czechoslovakia.
After hosting the VI Pan American Games in 1971, Colombia sent a talented squad to the Olympic Games in the West German city of Munich. The Colombian contingent arrived in Munich with more than seventy sportsmen and women. In the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG), Helmut Bellingrodt emerged as an interesting athletic figure following his silver medal in the 1972 Shooting Tournament, the nation's first Olympian medal. By late 1972, he was Colombia's Athlete of the Year. Three years after being medalist in West Germany, he again became one of the most outstanding Latino athletes in 1974 following his world record in Switzerland.

Nonetheless, two Colombian stars, runners Victor Mora and Alvaro Mejia, failed to win medals in the men's marathon. Mejia finished 48th, meanwhile Mora placed 52nd. Both athletes had good performances, but could not win medals. Jaramillo -the country's best male swimmer in the 20th Century, after Pablo Restrepo-was regarded as one of the top Latino swimmers at Montreal 1976. On Soviet soil, Colombia's soccer returned to the Summer Games, placing 10th. Months before embarking to the former Soviet Republic of Russia, they were runners-up to Argentina in he Pre-Olympic Cup on home soil. Despite not having serious rivals due to international boycott - among them Argentina, Ghana, Egypt-- the national squad did not even the semis, finishing 10th in the Football Olympic Cup. By contrast, Pablo Restrepo, who had been bronze medalist in the men's 200-meter breaststroke at the 1979 Pan American Games on Puerto Rico, became the first individual from Colombia to reach the finals in the Olympic Swimming Championships.
At the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, Colombia won its first medal since 1972 when the former world record holder Bellingrodt came close to winning the gold in the men's running game target (shooting). In the meantime, Ximena Restrepo appeared as a sprinter in the women's 200m (track-and-field), finishing in 34th place in South Korea. Subsequently, at Barcelona'92, Restrepo became the first female in South America to earn an Olympian medal in athletics when she was one of the world's three best sprinters in the 400m. During these Games on Spaniard soil, on the other side, the Colombian soccer side qualified for the Olympic Tournament in the Pre-Olympic competition in Latin America, alongside Paraguay, but they did not make the second round.
The country's top athletes at the 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics were Carlos Grisales (marathon), Hector Moreno (20-kilometer walk), and Daniel Reyes (boxing). Colombian-born long-distance runner Grisales placed 11th in the men's marathon, meanwhile his countryman Reyes was semi-finalist in the United States.
In the 21st Century, Colombia won its first Olympic gold upon Maria Isabel Urrutia's win in the Weightlifting championships at the 2000 Sydney Games. Before competing in the weightlifting competitions on home soil and abroad, Urrutia was recognized as one of the best among the handful of shot putters from Latin America in the 1980s and 1990s, having qualified for the 1988 Seoul Games -where she came in 20th place in the women's shot put, among 25 competitors.
Colombia obtained two bronzes in cycling and weightlifting in the Games of the 28th Olympiad in Greece in 2004, both medals were won by female Olympians. Its main stars are Hector Paez, Maria Luisa Calle, Marlon Alirio Perez, Juan Arango, Edwin Avila, Arles Castro, Weimar Roldan and Mariana Pujon. Calle won a medal for the country's Olympic team at the 2004 Athens Games.
In track-and-field, Catherine Ibarguen, one of the three triple jumpers to receive a medal in the IAAF World Championships last year, could become the first female from Colombia to win an Olympian medal in athletics since the early 1990s as Latin America's star sprinter Ximena Restrepo claimed bronze in the Barcelonese Games. In the Olympic weightlifting competition, Colombia has a strong chance with three Pan American gold medalists--- Oscar Figueroa, Mercedes Isabel Perez, and Ubaldina Valoyes. On the other hand, Doris Patiyo (women's taekwondo), Danilo Cano (men's shooting), and Cristian Mosquera (men's wrestling) also are top favorites to reach medals in the United Kingdom.
